I was based out of Apple Valley for several years, first renting planes through Midfield Aviation and then renting a hangar there once I bought my plane. It’s a really good GA airport for being out in the desert as it is - although close in desert terms to a residential area there isn’t anything but desert and distribution centers around it. With much of a westerly breeze you can get downwind eddies off of Bell Mountain just west of the field which can cause winds at each end of 18/36 to be almost 180 deg different and variable down the length of the runway.
